Broadcasting licence for Watford community radio station

Posted by news desk in Local News, 5th March 2010, 1:26pm

Watford community radio station, The Vibe, has gained a full-time radio broadcasting license from regulator Ofcom, following a four-year campaign.

The station has run four successful trial broadcasts in Watford, starting its life as Fresh FM, and has been behind the recent broadcast in South Oxhey, Youth FM.

The Vibe will be a not-for-profit community station providing recent music for young people in and around Watford.  It will also give them a voice on key issues like bullying, drugs, alcohol, vandalism, and personal safety.  The station will generate funding through grants, donations and sponsorship.

The organisation has received £11,000 from the Mayor's Community Fund over the last four years to allow short-term broadcasts, which have enabled the organisation to apply for a full time licence.

Matt Cadman (pictured with Watford mayor Dorothy Thornhill) managed all the trial broadcasts and had the idea of forming a new local radio station for young people. He said: “I am absolutely delighted. I’ll be honest, it has been a very long four years and trying to keep everybody’s excitement up has been extremely hard work. I cannot thank people from the community enough. Putting together a full time licence document has been a life long dream in itself – let alone being able to do it in the town you live in and have passion for.”

The new radio station expects to launch by late 2010 and the Vibe FM team will be working hard to secure premises, create links with local organisations and businesses over the next few months.
